Windows 8 name official, three editions confirmed
Windows 8 is now officially the name for Microsoft’s next generation operating system (OS), according to a post on the Windows Team blog.
The post confirms the name of the next OS, as well as the three editions that it will ship in.
There will be two editions of Windows 8 for x86 and x64 processors namely Windows 8, and Windows 8 Pro.
Windows 8 is targeted at consumers, and includes an updated Windows Explorer, updated Task Manager, improved multi-monitor support, and the ability to “switch languages on the fly”. All of these features were previously only available to Windows 7 Enterprise and Ultimate customers.
Windows 8 Pro meanwhile is targeted at business and technical professionals. It adds features including encryption, virtualization, PC management, and domain connectivity over the standard Windows 8 package.
There will also be a “Media Pack” add-on for Windows 8 Pro, which includes Windows Media Centre functionality.
The third version of the OS is for devices running ARM-based processors, and will be named Windows RT.
