Time’s top tech influencers in the world

Time has released its list of the 100 most influential people in the world, and makes mention of key figures in the technology space.

The list isn’t a numbered affair where influence is scaled and listed according to some quantative measure, instead featuring each selected individual for their own measure of influence.

“We try to choose those people whose influence is both lasting and, with a few notable exceptions, laudable,” said Time.

“Our categories — Breakouts, Pioneers, Moguls, Leaders and Icons — reflect the different types of influence demonstrated by people on the list.”

Musicians, artists, actors, sports stars, chefs, authors, political leaders and even comedians, all form part of the list – with South Africa’s own double-amputee sprinter, Oscar Pistorius making a showing.

People who’ve had an influence in the tech and online space got their place in the spotlight as well.

Top tech influencers

While the expected big-name CEOs in tech made it onto the list, such as Apple CEO Tim Cook, and IBM’s chief Virginia Rometty, a big theme with influential individuals in tech centered around the Internet, start-ups and pioneering social change through online media.

The top technology influencers (in no particular order), according to Time’s list of 100 most influential people in the world, are as follows:

  • Salman Khan – Creator of free online education resource site, khanacademy.org;
  • Ben Rattray – Creator of petition and activism site, Change.org;

  • Pete Cashmore – Creator of news site and news blog, Mashable;
  • Daniel Ek – Creator of online music streaming platform, Spotify;
  • Erik Martin – User-curated content site, Reddit’s general manager.
