Apple’s next generation iPhone device may make use of a new touch panel technology, allowing the phone to be slimmer and lighter.

This is according to a report by Digitimes, who quote sources saying that yield rates of “in-cell touch panels” have improved to the point where Apple is now in talks with two Japanese companies who produce the technology.

In-cell multi-touch technology integrates into the TFT LCD manufacturing process, reducing the need for touch-dedicated sensors and glass over the LCD panel.

The report goes on to state that the Japanese companies will increase production of the technology in the second quarter of this year, ahead of the expected third quarter iPhone 5 launch date.
