Intel boosts hardware patent portfolio
Intel will strengthen its patent portfolio, this following the purchase of Cray’s interconnect hardware development program and related intellectual property for $140 million (R1.1 billion) in cash.
Cray, known for its supercomputers, also announced that up to 74 of its roughly 800 staff will be joining Intel as a result of the acquisition.
Cray will continue to develop the technology and sell its current product ranges despite selling off the division.
Interconnect technology is comprised of high-speed links between high-performance computers.
The deal is the second Intel has made since the beginning of the year. In January it purchased the InfiniBand product line and assets from Qlogic, and is expected to hire “a significant number” of Qlogic employees.
