The Pebble smartwatch has raised over R80 million in funding through crowd-source funding website, Kickstarter.

The watch, whose Kickstarter page has been up for three weeks, broke all records within its first week online, raising $3.6 million (R28.96 million).

Demand for the watch was so great that Pebble founder, Eric Migicovsky had to limit pre-orders for the watch at 85,000. These were sold out to 66,434 backers, causing the fundraising project to close 9 days earlier than expected.

The smartwatch is compatible with Apple iOS 5 or Android 2.3 and up. It features a 1.26-inch 144 x 168-pixel black and white ePaper display with a backlight, as well as Bluetooth 2.1 and Bluetooth 4.0 support for connectivity.

A three-axis accelerometer, vibrating motor and four control buttons located on the side of the device round off the package.
