Apple changes iPad name
Apple has changed the name of the iPad 3 “Wi-Fi + 4G” model to “Wi-Fi + Cellular”, according to the company’s website.
The name-change may have been spurred-on by ongoing legal pressure from the Australian government, which argues that the iPad 3 Wi-Fi + 4G model does not support 4G down under.
Australian carriers use the 1,800MHz spectrum for 4G connectivity rather than the 700MHz or 2,100MHz bands that the iPad is capable of using.
The name-change has been spotted on Apple’s websites in a few countries.
In South Africa, network operators are trialling LTE in the 1,800MHz frequency band, but they are waiting for spectrum in the 800MHz and 2,600MHz bands to be assigned before they can roll out LTE.
These bands are incompatible with the iPad 3’s hardware.
Apple has not publicly commented on the name change.
