Google+ struggles with user activity

Google+, the search giant’s social network which launched in September 2011, may have healthy user numbers, but new research shows that actual user activity on the network is far from impressive.

The social network boasts 100 million users (as of April 2012), however, analytics firm, RJ Metrics revealed that there is a low amount of activity among Google+ users.

The RJ metrics report showed that an average post on Google+ gets fewer than one “+1,” (similar to “likes” on Facebook), and less than one reply.

Links and publicly shared items on Google+ only get re-shared 0.17 times by others, and users will only post information once every 12 days, on average.

The report also showed that usage per user declines each month after they make their first public post.

Another cause of concern for Google – roughly 30 percent of users never make a second post on Google+.

Google responded to the results of the study, with a spokesperson noting:

“By only tracking engagement on public posts, this study is flawed and not an accurate representation of all the sharing and activity taking place on Google+. As we’ve said before, more sharing occurs privately to circles and individuals than publicly on Google+.”

“The beauty of Google+ is that it allows you to share privately – you don’t have to publicly share your thoughts, photos or videos with the world.”
