Suppliers of display panels for Apple’s rumoured iPad mini tablet are preparing to undergo a certification examination ahead of mass production.

This is according to Taiwan news organisation, The Liberty Times, which reports that LG Display and AU Optronics are preparing sample display panels for certification.

If the companies achieve certification, they are expected to split production of 6 million iPad mini screens ahead of the device’s launch later this year.

TPK Holding and Chimei Innolux are rumoured to be the suppliers of backlighting for the iPad mini.

Apple is expected to launch the rumoured iPad mini tablet in the fourth quarter this year, taking on rivals, Amazon and Barnes & Noble, in the $200 (R1,675.27) to $250 (R2,094.08) price segment.
