Facebook building a smartphone?
A less-than-ideal IPO isn’t stopping Facebook from expanding its business, with the latest rumours claiming the social media company is working on building its own smartphone.
Unnamed sources quoted by The New York Times claim that Facebook is working on a smartphone device, which it hopes to release some time next year.
New York Times journalist, Nick Bilton cited the sources as Facebook employees and several engineers recruited to work on the project.
The sources claim that the company has hired more than six “former Apple software and hardware engineers who worked on the iPhone, and one who worked on the iPad,” according to Bilton.
Previous reports have also mentioned the possible existence of a Facebook smartphone in production.
AllThingsD reported that Facebook negotiated with HTC to build a smartphone which integrates the social network into all aspects of the phone – a report which was reiterated by tech news site, Digitimes.
TechCrunch, meanwhile, first reported on the possibility of a Facebook smartphone back in 2010.
