MWEB wireless network switch-off

MWEB Business will switch off its wireless network at the end of May, and has already migrated most of their customers to other solutions.

MWEB Business General Manager, Andre Joubert explained that their wireless network was basically a remnant of their WiMax trial network from 2007.

After the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) refused to extend MWEB’s WiMax trial license in early 2008, the company announced that it will switch off its WiMax network in April 2008.

With all the high sites and backhaul links in place, MWEB Business decided to continue to operate this network using unlicensed spectrum and Wi-Fi equipment for last mile access.

However, Joubert explained that it requires significant resources to expand coverage and reach viable economies of scale. Unless you have extensive coverage, Joubert said, you have to tell most customers who apply for the service ‘no’, which is not the way to run a network.

MWEB Business made a commercial decision in March 2012 to switch off the network at the end of May 2012.

Joubert explained that all MWEB customers who still use the wireless network were notified of the decision, and most of them have been migrated to alternative solutions from MWEB Business.
