New smaller SIM gets standardised

The ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) have given the go-ahead for a newer and smaller SIM card to become the successor to the current iteration.

The new fourth form factor (4FF) card will be 40 percent smaller than the current SIM card design.

It will be 12.3mm wide by 8.8mm high, and 0.67mm think, and will be fully backwards compatible with current SIM cards.

After the agreement, which took place in Osaka, Japan, The ETSI have stated that the new design would make its way into major network operators, smart card suppliers and mobile device manufacturers in due course.
