ICASA Meets with US Regulator

The three day consultation aimed to serve as a platform for information sharing regarding a variety of issues in the telecoms arena.

According to ICASA counselor Dr. Tracy Cohen, the meetings took the form of a general consultation and information sharing session amoung telecom regulators.

Included in the discussions were universal service and e-rate implementation; telecommunication pricing; alternative broadband technologies; competition and markets and competitive approaches to regulatory processes.

Cohen stated that about an hour and a half was dedicated examining various broadband technologies and assessing their application in certain telecom environments.

The issue of local loop unbundling was also discussed briefly in their meetings added Cohen.

Three of the FCC’s senior staff members attended as well as the ICASA Council, 20 ICASA staff, representatives from the Department of Communication and the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications.
