TELKOM TO CUT PRICES

It is not known by how much Telkom will reduce its prices but chief sales and marketing officer Wally Beelders promises a detailed announcement will be made by the end of March. He says Telkom will also announce that it will bundle discounted voice telephony products with its broadband solutions.

The reductions come as competition from wireless operators, including Wireless Business Solutions and Sentech, intensifies and as the recently licensed second network operator prepares to launch its first services. Telkom has come under fire over the high prices it charges consumers for broadband line rentals and for the strict monthly bandwidth caps it imposes.

Icasa last year held formal hearings into the matter following complaints by industry and consumer groups. The regulator has proposed a range of punitive measures, though these have been panned by Telkom and by some of its rivals as poorly thought out.
