ICASA USAL announced takes place Monday
USALs are telecommunications licensees that provide telecommunication service in areas with a tele-density of less than 5%.
According to ICASA, USAL licenses are ear-marked for small and emerging entrepreneurs to enter the burgeoning and lucrative telecommunications market.
Applicants were invited on the 11th of January this year by communications minister, Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri, to apply for the second phase of USAL applications.
Second Invitations to Apply (ITA), were sent out to potential applicants in the 14 municipal districts stated the Regulator.
Public hearings were held by ICASA from November 2005 to January 2006 to consider all the applicants and the names of the successful bidders will be released today at their Sandton office.
There are currently 7 USALs in operation: Bokone Telecomms (Pty) Ltd – Limpopo Province; Kingdom Communications (Pty) Ltd – KwaZulu-NatalProvince; Thinta Thinta Telecommunications (Pty) Ltd – KwaZulu-Natal Province; Ilizwi Telecommunications (Pty) Ltd- Eastern Cape Province; Karabotel (Pty) Ltd – Northwest Province; Bokamoso Consortium (Pty) Ltd – Free State Province and; Amatole Telecommunications (Pty) Ltd– Eastern Cape.
