Oracle solution ‘doubles up database data protection’

The report, written by Enterprise Strategy Group analyst, Brian Babineau, assesses the functionality of Oracle Data Guard. According to the report, Oracle Data Guard enables customers to implement and maintain a standby database, with no geographical limitations, to protect data and increase availability should any event cause a production database to fail.

Features such as Data Guard Transport Services, Data Guard Apply Services, and tight integration with Oracle Real Application Clusters and Oracle Flashback Database are said to help customers to realise more efficient network utilisation, comprehensive data protection, standby utilisation and integrated management of their business continuity solutions.

In the report, Babineau states that Oracle Data Guard "represents a cost-effective solution" for protecting enterprise data, "going beyond the limitations" of standard tape-based back-up and recovery and remote mirroring solutions, with a native database capability that provides optimum data protection and availability.

Additionally, he claims, customers can increase their return on disaster recovery investments by using Oracle Data Guard to run queries, reports and back-ups using their standby database.
