Standard Bank’s R10 per litre fuel rewards
Standard Bank’s UCount rewards programme allows customers to earn up to R10 back per litre of fuel bought and 2GB of monthly data.
Using the UCount programme, Standard Bank customers can earn rewards by spending money at partnered retailers and earning virtual currency.
This virtual currency can then be spent at the partnered retailers to subsidise purchases or pay for items in full.
Standard Bank uses a tiering system, similar to FNB’s eBucks and the Discovery rewards programme, to determine the extent of the reward earned.
The most effective way to analyse the benefits is to break the programme down into earning partners, spending partners, and benefits.
Cash-back partners refer to partnered retailers where Standard Bank customers can earn points as virtual currency. On the other hand, spending partners are the partnered retailers where users can spend this virtual currency.
These partners are often petrol stations, supermarkets, and online retailers.
The UCount rewards programme has 23 cash-back partners and 23 spending partners, providing various places to earn and spend reward points.
These partners include Dis-Chem, Zando, Showmax, Builders Warehouse, and Makro.
However, what users earn from the cash-back partners depends on the rewards tier they are currently in.
There are five tiers, five being the most advanced and one the least.
A user’s tier is determined by the number of points they’ve accumulated by using Standard Bank’s banking products. The more banking products used, the more points are earned.
All tiers have the same spend cap for earning rewards, which is R50,000 for card purchases and R2,500 when buying fuel.
In addition to earning cash back from the partnered retailers, UCount customers can earn a percentage back on their spending when using a Standard Bank credit or debit card.
The amount of cash back earned depends on the tier the customer is in.
For instance, a tier one user can earn 0.25% and 0.08% back on credit and debit card purchases, respectively.
A tier five user, on the other hand, will earn 1% back on credit purchases and 0.25% back on debit purchases.
Fuel rewards
UCount users can earn up to R10 back per litre when purchasing fuel on a maximum spend of R2,500 as long as specific requirements are met.
Firstly, the cash back earned per litre depends on the user’s rewards tier. To earn R10 per litre, users need to be in tier five and use their credit card to make the purchase. Users in tier one will earn 60 cents per litre.
Secondly, the purchase needs to be made at a Caltex or Astron Energy fuel station and using a Standard Bank credit or debit card.
Lastly, users need to have a Standard Bank current account and two other banking products from the following categories:
- Home loan
- Personal loan
- Insurance
- Wills
- Offshore banking
- Online share trading
- Standard Bank Mobile
- Vehicle and asset finance
- Credit card
- Saving and investments
- Services
Additional rewards
Users can choose from three categories of retailers to earn additional rewards based on their spending behaviour: grocery, lifestyle, and fashion rewards.
When shopping at Makro, UCount users can earn 0.75% cash back on general merchandise purchased.
Additionally, users can earn up to 20% back in rewards points for grocery or fashion purchases, depending on their chosen category.
UCount users are also given a personal goal at the beginning of every month, which, if achieved, can earn them additional points, vouchers, and coupons.
When the goal is offered on either the first or third of every month, users will be given a deadline of when to achieve it.
There is also a data reward for customers using Standard Bank Mobile. Based on the tier users are in, they can earn up to 2GB per month if they have an active Standard Bank Mobile SIM.
The table below shows the points required for each tier and the rewards earned for fuel, credit and debit spend, and data rewards.
