ChatGPT rival to launch R3,900 monthly subscription
Anthropic plans to offer a much higher-priced subscription option for its Claude chatbot, making it the latest artificial intelligence company to test the limits of what it can charge consumers for more access to advanced AI models.
The San Francisco-based company is set to announce on Wednesday a new Max plan, which will cost $100 (R1,930) or $200 (R3,860) per month, depending on usage.
The company said the $100 option will give users the ability to send five times as many queries to Claude as its current $18-per-month (R347) Pro plan and the $200 option will offer 20 times as much usage.
In general, paid Pro users can send at least 45 messages to Claude over a five-hour period, according to Anthropic.
Like other AI companies, Anthropic has been working to convince customers and businesses to pay for its software to help offset the significant costs of building cutting-edge AI models.
The new plan is similar to a $200-per-month subscription that rival OpenAI unveiled late last year for its ChatGPT chatbot, though OpenAI’s option includes unlimited usage of its most powerful AI models.
Anthropic said users who pay for the Max plan will get more substantial responses to their queries and have their requests prioritized when Claude experiences peak traffic periods.
The company will also give Max subscribers preferential access to its new AI models and software features.
Anthropic’s latest model, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, lets users decide if they want a quick answer to a simple question or a more time-consuming response that mimics human reasoning — a novel approach that may help the AI startup stand out in a competitive landscape.
In March, Anthropic closed a deal to raise $3.5 billion (R68 billion) at a valuation of $61.5 billion (R1.2 trillion), cementing its place as one of the largest startups in the world.
