Spice Africa offers services such as on-demand music and video streaming over mobile phones, partnering with network operators in countries such as Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia, Uganda, and South Africa.
Nagar said that in South Africa they decided to use data as the main bearer for its music service, but elsewhere on the continent they have a voice-based offering available for feature phone users as well.
Asked whether using voice as a medium to stream music isn’t expensive for consumers, Nagar said: “Only in South Africa.”
He went on to explain that voice services in Tanzania cost about a tenth of what they do in South Africa.
Spice Africa didn’t even consider using voice as a bearer for its music services in South Africa because of the high cost, Nagar said.
