New UEC DStv HD PVR now available
MultiChoice announced that the long awaited UEC High Definition PVR is now available and is slowly making its way into retail channels. The new decoder is very similar to the PACE HD PVR which was launched in mid-2008, but sports an S-Video port which is not available on its competitor.
The UEC HD PVR allows you to view one channel, while recording two other channels simultaneously. This means that DStv subscribers who want to view two channels simultaneously will have to subscribe to DStv’s XtraView service.
According to one DStv HD subscriber the new UEC HD PVR’s processor is slightly faster than the PACE HD PVR while the performance of the new PVR is better than the current model. He further claims that the UEC model has ‘a much better RF output’ and that the boot up time for the UEC is half that of the PACE.
“Video stutter, this is the only real downside of the UEC. It occurs during playback & in the buffer. After fast forwarding the video freezes for a split second & the audio goes out of sync before it corrects itself about 5 seconds later. Small issue but quite irritating,” he said.
The price for the new UEC HD PVR – model number DSD4660 – is R2999, exactly the same as the current PACE HD PVR. MultiChoice has previously revealed plans to launch a more affordable, ‘entry level’ HD PVR, but the company said that there is currently no planned launch date or pricing available for this device.
“I anticipate it will be some time before those dates [for the ‘entry level’ HD PVR] are formally announced and confirmed,” a MultiChoice representative said.
MultiChoice recently launched two additional High Definition channels – Supersport HD and Discovery HD Showcase – to bring the number of HD channels on DStv to three.
