Gigabit Metro Ethernet service from Cybersmart
Cybersmart has launched a Gigabit Metro Ethernet service, competing directly with Metro Ethernet services from large telecoms providers like Telkom and Neotel.
The new Lightspeed Gigabit Metro Ethernet service is a layer 2 Ethernet service between any two points in a Lightspeed footprint within a province.
The Lightspeed metro service is provisioned over the Lightspeed redundant fibre backbone, and is available in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban.
Cybersmart CEO Laurie Fialkov said this is an exciting development for the company, as it moves it from an Internet provider to a full connectivity provider.
“For the first time we have a product which can compete head-on with enterprise products from Neotel and Telkom,” said Fialkov.

Fialkov explained that their Metro Ethernet service comes at a fraction of the cost of competing products from Telkom and Neotel.
He said a comparable service from Telkom or Neotel costs close to R300,000 per month, while their product is available at less than R30,000 per month.
“We have removed all complexity from our pricing model. The pricing is independent of distance, and the customer has one fixed flat rate between sites.”
Service | Contract length | Setup cost | Monthly price |
Gigabit Metro Ethernet | 24 months | Free | R24,999 |
Gigabit Metro Ethernet | 12 months | R15,999 | R35,999 |
