Trade union Solidarity has released its “retrenchment bloodbath” report, which details how many workers were retrenched in South Africa over the past year.
“The number of employees accepting voluntary severance packages is increasing at an alarming rate as employees simply reach saturation point with having to work amid uncertainty,” said Solidarity.
“What is of more concern is that the current pattern and wave of retrenchments are very similar to situation at the end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009 which was the precursor to the recession.”
The report stated that the ICT sector in South Africa suffered 8,141 retrenchment processes during the past year – with Telkom the major contributor to the figure.
The table below shows how many local employees have been affected by retrenchments – focussing on companies in the communications sector, professional industry, and among individual members.
