Cable trench unearthing doesn't impact operators

Johannesburg Water have unearthed a tangle of cables on the corner of Harley Street and Pretoria Avenue in the Randburg central business district while trying to repair a leak in a water main.

Graeme Bell, chief information officer at Technews, which is based in Randburg, reported that Johannesburg Water was still affecting repairs to the water main at around 13h00 today and Telkom technicians on scene had yet to gain access to the cables.

As a result the technicians said they couldn’t give any indication of when the cables would be repaired.

According to MTN, Vodacom, Neotel and Telkom, the impact on their networks has been minimal.

Vodacom said that at this point there seems to have been no impact on their network.

MTN also said that they weren’t seeing any impact on their network. “MTN can confirm that there has been no interruption in its network and that MTN is currently not experiencing any network outages,” said Kanagaratnam Lambotharan, chief technology officer of MTN said.

Neotel reported no cable faults in Randburg and said that they weren’t experiencing any outages on their network due to the cables being dug up in Randburg.

Telkom said that they too aren’t seeing any faults on their core network, which they can monitor from their network operations centre (NOC) in Centurion.

They explained that if the break was in the local loop (the last mile of copper cable from the Telkom exchange to the customer premises) they have to rely on faults being logged with their call centre, from which they can identify cable breaks.

The call centre will then be able to tell customers immediately upon calling whether they have been affected by a general outage such as that caused by a cable break.

However, according to Bell, when they logged their call with Telkom this morning they were around the 1000th complaint for the incident.
