Bogus ICASA inspector arrested
It is alleged that the 37 year old Ahmed Abduliah was in possession of the radio equipment type approval application forms and was checking whether cellular phones were type approved.
After threatening three shop owners at the China City Mall, one of the shop owners asked if he can produce his ICASA Inspectors’ card but Abduliah failed to do so. The shop owner quietly phoned a legitimate ICASA inspector who confirmed no knowledge of a Pakistani man working for the Authority at that position.
The shop owner alerted the Langlaagte Police and the man, allegedly from Burgersfort in Limpopo, was arrested and charged with fraud.
“It should be noted that the fraud case was opened by the three shop owners and ICASA will engage with the police to have this man charged further in terms of the ICASA Act,” the telecoms regulator said in a press statement.
“We would like to condemn this kind of behaviour and warn cellular phone shop owners and all stakeholders to be careful of such bogus inspectors and to make sure that they know who ICASA inspectors are.”
