The results of the 2011 Sunday Times Generation Next Brand Survey were released recently, ranking BlackBerry as the coolest brand among urban and peri-urban South Africans between the ages of 7 and 22.
BlackBerry was voted the coolest brand in South Africa, followed by BMW and Coca Cola. MTN’s Ayoba! took top honors as the coolest brand slogan, followed by Nike’s ‘Just Do It’ and DStv ‘So Much More’.
When it came to telecommunications companies Vodacom was ranked as the top brand, followed by MTN and Cell C. 8ta and Virgin Mobile completed the top 5.
According to the youth survey Neotel and Telkom were the least cool telecommunication operator brands, ranked last and second last respectively.
This is however not entirely unexpected as the two companies have a strong focus on the business market and have very few (if any) products aimed at the youth market. Their advertising and branding is therefore aimed at an older audience rather than teenagers.
