Egypt Internet disrupted after cable damage

The Gulf was also affected, with two United Arab Emirates telecommunications firms saying that international phone calls were also hit.

"A communication cable in the Mediterranean sea was cut, which led to partial disruptions to Internet and communication services in Egypt," Egypt's Tareq Kamel said.

The minister said an emergency team had been formed to try to find alternative communication channels.

The statement said it could take several days for services to return to normal.

Emirati providers Etisalat and Du issued statements telling clients they were working to restore services as quickly as possible, the UAE's WAM news agency reported.
