Nepad signs milestone memorandum
The memorandum — the aim of which is to improve ICT access in African schools — was signed on the final day of the four-day Nepad e-Africa congress.
The Geneva-based DSF has pledged to support the programme by collaborating in fund raising activities.
Manager of Nepad's e-school programme, a sub programme of e-Africa, Jeanne Meta said the memorandum was "very important".
"This is the first time we've signed a memorandum with a development organisation," she said.
Previous collaborations had been with business.
"Development organisations are very important, because they assist in reducing poverty and don't aim at making a profit."
She said more development organisations would now collaborate with Nepad.
"We are talking with the EU, the UN and the Japan International Co-operation Centre."
The Nepad-e-School programme is an initiative to facilitate the use of computers in African schools.
Of the 23 members, 16 were "deeply involved" in the programme, Meta said.
In every one of these 16 countries, six secondary schools were equipped with computers and other facilities such as white boards and cameras.
"But six is not enough, we need to roll out the programme."
With the help of DSF about 10 more schools per country could be involved in the programme.
Meta admitted it was a slow process, but emphasised the partnership was a long-term one.
