Dina Pule the new Minister of Communications

President Jacob Zuma announced a cabinet reshuffle today (24 October 2011). Ms. Dina Pule will be replacing Radhakrishna “Roy” Padayachie as Minister of Communications.

Padayachie has been appointed as minister of public service and administration.

Pule was deputy minister of communications from May 2009 until 31 October 2010, when she was sacked along with the minister of communications at the time, Siphiwe Nyanda.

ANC Member of Parliament, Ms. Tembisa Stella Ndabeni, will become the deputy minister of communications, replacing Obed Bapela.

Bapela has in turn been appointed deputy Minister in the Presidency for performance monitoring and evaluation.

In a related development general Nhlanhla Mkwanazi was appointed as acting National Police Commissioner after general Bheki Cele has been suspended.

Zuma also announced the following changes to his cabinet:

  • Thembelani “Thulas” Nxesi, the deputy minister for rural development and land reform, will become the new minister of public works. The department will no longer have a deputy minister.
  • Richard Baloyi, the minister of public service and administration, has been appointed minister of cooperative governance and traditional affairs.
  • Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, the deputy minister of public works, will be the deputy minister for women, children and persons with disability.
  • S. Lechesa Tsenoli, chairperson of the portfolio committee on cooperative governance and traditional affairs, has been appointed as deputy minister for rural development and land reform.
