Affordable voice and data satellite service for SA

Telkom revealed on Wednesday (26 October 2011) at the 2011 MyBroadband Conference that it plans to launch an affordable new voice and data satellite service called SpaceStream Home.

The new satellite-based service is set to cost in the region of R400-R500 per month.

Telkom’s Steve Lewis said that SpaceStream Home is one intervention to minimize the impact of copper cable theft, adding that they are looking to launching the service around March 2012.

Lewis said that they also have a wide range of satellite services that they are revamping, mentioning that they have just installed a new hub to serve their needs.

SpaceStream Home forms part of this project. The service, Lewis explains, will use voice over IP for telephony and promises “really good data speeds”.
