THE SABC is pushing ahead with its international channel — SABC News International — with the 24-hours news channel already available in several countries, despite a launch which attracted little fanfare.
Deals have been signed with US broadcaster MHZ and with Mauritius, where the channel is available 12 hours a day.
Negotiations are underway with Mozambique — where a deal is expected soon — Uganda, and Tanzania, while India and China have also expressed interest, the SABC has confirmed.
The channel is also targeting Europe.
“The whole aim of the channel is to be global,” explained channel ambassador Ravi Goshalia, who is marketing the channel to broadcasters.
Goshalia said he planned to present the channel to the national broadcaster in every African country.
At home, the picture is somewhat bleaker. SABC News International is available on the late night slot on SABC2 and on Sentech’s Vivid platform.
The channel may become available on DStv, depending on negotiations.
