Chinese whispers circle Telkom Media

Telkom is, apparently, close to finalising the sale of a big chunk of its 66% holding in Telkom Media, the company that has a pay-TV licence but was thrown into uncertainty after Telkom announced in April that it was no longer interested in it.

It is understood that a local consortium, backed by Chinese money, is a front runner to take it over and enable it to start moving with the daunting task of taking on MultiChoice.

While Telkom Media has been in limbo, e.tv, which was also awarded a pay-TV licence, pulled the plug on its satellite TV aspirations, but did launch a 24-hour news service on TV — which was exactly what Telkom Media had planned to do.
