New comms minister: first hurdle, flat on the face

New communications minister Yunus Carrim has failed to deliver on his first promise – to present deadlines to be achieved by the Department of Communications over the next nine months.

Speaking to John Robbie on Radio 702 on 11 July 2013, Carrim promised that people can expect clarity from the department about its plans within the next two weeks.

“What we have spoken about, Stella Ndabeni – the deputy minister – and myself, this is what we are going to seek to do and in two weeks we will be more clear about this,” Carrim said.

“There are some things which we can certainly do over the nine months. What you will find is the achievements of certain deadlines, and you can hold us by them once we present them to you within the next two weeks,” Carrim promised.

The new minister further promised “a new mood, a new thrust and a new energy from the DoC towards achieving its goals” and a “foundation for the new five year term from which the DoC can work”.

Holding the new minister to his deadlines

Nearly three weeks after the minister promised to present his deadlines “within the next two weeks”, the DoC has not provided any publicly available deadlines which will be achieved.

Well placed industry players, who asked to remain anonymous, also confirmed that they have not seen any deadlines from the Department of Communications.

MyBroadband contacted the Department of Communications for comment on the promised list of deadlines, but they were not certain what deadlines we were referring to.

A DoC spokesperson promised to look into the issue and provide feedback, but no feedback was received before the time of publication.

In an attempt to get an explanation from the DoC about the missed deadline, MyBroadband contacted a second DoC spokesperson. He said that he could not immediately comment, and hence needs a bit more time, because of their engagement today.
