Online dating sites used to rob men in Pretoria

Online dating on smartphone

Criminals are using online dating sites to lure men to the suburb of Sunnyside in Pretoria to rob them, according to a report by TimesLive.

Police said the criminals use women to “pose as prostitutes or as people looking for lovers” on dating sites. Victims are then asked to meet in the suburb, where they are robbed.

Several cases involving this modus operandi have been reported to local police, stated the report.

One incident involved a 21-year-old woman, who is believed to be part of a syndicate.

The suspect allegedly posed as a prostitute online and lured a 29-year-old Pretoria West man to her apartment in Sunnyside.

The victim was robbed by three men after he arrived – money, a cellphone, and his bank cards were taken.

A similar incident in March saw a 54-year-old Sandton man robbed of R190‚000 when he was lured to a woman’s flat and robbed by three men after arriving.
