GoFundMe will ban all anti-vaccination campaigns in a bid to curb misinformation, reports The Daily Beast.
“Campaigns raising money to promote misinformation about vaccines violate GoFundMe’s terms of service and will be removed from the platform,” said spokesperson Bobby Whithorne.
Whithorne also said that anti-vaccination campaigns are “extremely rare” – with the company needing to shut down under 10 campaigns so far.
The Daily Beast said that over $170,000 had been raised for anti-vaccination campaigns over the past year, including:
- Anti-vaccination activist Larry Cook, who collected $79,900.
- A legal defence fund which raised $25,220.
- Three campaigns promoted by a Facebook page that raised $39,801.
The American Medical Association recently sent a letter to prominent social media companies asking them to fight against anti-vaccination content, as it places public health on the line.
