Future of MWEB Wi-Fi

MWEB recently announced it was shutting down its stand-alone Wi-Fi service and that its users should switch to AlwaysOn’s services from Internet Solutions.
This caused some confusion among MWEB Fon users, with many wondering where that leaves the free uncapped Wi-Fi access they were promised as part of their multi-month ADSL contracts.
Responding to queries about this, MWEB support personnel explained that Fon clients will be able to get uncapped Wi-Fi at all AlwaysOn hotspots.
MWEB ADSL subscribers will also be able to connect to AlwaysOn sites, select MWEB as their provider, and log in with their e-mail address and password.
AlwaysOn, MWEB Wi-Fi rebranding
The shuttering of MWEB Wi-Fi forms part of a bigger move to rebrand both its services and those of Internet Solutions, a spokesperson for MWEB said.
Dimension Data, which owns Internet Solutions, launched a wholesale Wi-Fi network in September 2014 which combines the network assets of MWEB and AlwaysOn.
Dubbed WirelessCo, the open access network is majority-owned by Dimension Data, while MultiChoice owns 49%. MultiChoice and MWEB are both Naspers-owned companies.
“As an interim measure, WirelessCo is using the AlwaysOn gateway to manage access to this new combined network,” said MWEB.
“This is a short-term solution until a new access gateway operated under the WirelessCo brand is released.”
