“Secret” South African network connects users for free with no speed limit, and no cap

The Pretoria Wireless User Group (PTAWUG) is South Africa’s premier user-maintained wireless network, and continues to offer hundreds of members free connectivity.

PTAWUG is a free, non-profit, non-commercial, community wireless network operating in Pretoria and the surrounding areas.

The network grew from its beginnings as two Linksys wireless routers and two panels on a Lynnwood roof in mid-2007, to a wide area network stretching tens of kilometres.

PTAWUG operates numerous high sites, which use the latest Wi-Fi network equipment to provide members with reliable, high-speed connections.

The initial network made use of Mikrotik equipment and grid parabolic Wi-Fi antennas, but there has been a move to Ubiquity Nano/Powerbeams and Rocket M5 dishes.

How to connect to the network

PTAWUG network coverage spans from Hamanskraal in the north to Midrand in the south, and to Krugersdorp and Hartbeespoort in the west.

The network offers its members unlimited on-net data, without any speed limits, which they can use as they see fit. There are no monthly fees.

While only limited Internet access is available, users enjoy a wide variety of on-net activities – including gaming, online radio, on-net communications and VoIP services, and file sharing services.

To join the PTAWUG network you will need to install a network kit, which includes a router board, a mini-PCI radio that suppers 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz, and an antenna.

More information about the network and how to connect is available on the PTAWUG website.
