Mall of Africa gets huge Wi-Fi network

VAST Networks, which has laid claim to being the first open-access Wi-Fi Network in South Africa, has launched “Africa’s largest Wi-Fi installation” in the Mall of Africa.

The Wi-Fi network was built with equipment provider Ruckus Wireless.

The teams from VAST and Ruckus installed more than one thousand access points, along with the network backbone needed to deliver a high-quality Wi-Fi experience, it said.

“A deployment of this scale is a massive undertaking by world standards and an African first which we are very proud of,” said VAST Networks CEO Grant Marais.

Technicians worked on the site for nearly six months to ensure service throughout the mall.

The Mall of Africa is South Africa’s largest shopping mall ever built in a single phase, with 131,000 square metres of retail space.

Earthworks for Mall of Africa began in October 2012, and it is at the heart of the Waterfall precinct – situated between Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The new mall opened its doors on 28 April, and is home to over 300 shops – many of which are flagship stores.
