The Wi-Fi router features Apple recommends for its products

Following Apple’s announcement that it is killing its AirPort wireless router range, the company has detailed what Wi-Fi routers users should buy.

Apple’s “Choosing a Wi-Fi router to use with Apple devices” page lists essential features for a Wi-Fi router to use with a Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV or other Apple device.

“For the most compatibility, reliability, and performance when used with Apple devices, look for a Wi-Fi router that offers these features,” said Apple.

The router features are:

  • IEEE 802.11ac standard.
  • Dual-band – 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
  • WPA2 Personal (AES) encryption.
  • MIMO or MU-MIMO.

“A traditional, single router is suitable for the size and layout of most home environments. For areas that are larger or more difficult to cover, mesh Wi-Fi systems offer flexible coverage, with multiple nodes,” said Apple.

Apple also provides guidance on how to set up your router and access points.
