1.2 Tbps wireless

Scientists in Italy have laid claim to having set a new world record for the fastest wireless data transmission to date. The team in Pisa say that in a continuous 12-hour test they managed to achieve transmission speeds of above 1.2 terabits per second.

The previous record was a, in comparison, paltry 160 gigabits per second, achieved by Korean researchers.

To achieve the kinds of speeds that are usually only reserved for fibre optic connections, the scientists had to adopt some of the technology used by fibre optic connections. Unlike the more traditional Wi-Fi or microwave communications, which use radio transmissions, the Italian scientists used a technology called free-space optical communications, which transmits data using light.

The technique is believed to be capable of high transmission speeds over thousands of kilometers. They are constrained, however, by having to be line-of-sight connections.
