Boosting WiFi in South Africa
AlwaysOn is investing in new WiFi technologies to boost WiFi hotspot access in South Africa, which includes Next Generation Hotspots, Ruckus Smart Cell gateways, and hotspot apps.
AlwaysOn CEO Nico Pretorius said that all AlwaysOn hotspots which offer the AlwaysOn Smart solution are Passpoint ready.
“Passpoint is also referred to Hotspot 2.0 or Next Generation Hotspots which has been ratified as the 802.11U standard which makes Wi-Fi access as secure and easy to connect as 3G networks,” explains Pretorius.
AlwaysOn has also recently launched their own app which is available for Android, iOS, MacOS and Windows.
“The app integrates with the AlwaysOn Hotspot finder which is GPS aware and enables customers to easily locate their nearest hotspot from any GPS enabled device,” said Pretorius.
To improve GSM integration AlwaysOn has recently installed the Ruckus Smart Cell gateway which enables the company to offer carrier class Wi-Fi.
“This technology enables us to easily integrate with GSM Operators and offer the ability to offload data traffic onto Wi-Fi,” said Pretorius.
AlwaysOn is also in the process of installing large numbers of high performance, 802.11n Smart Wi-Fi Access Points with Adaptive Antenna Technology to ensure optimal Wi-Fi coverage and performance.
The main advantages of this technology, which has already been deployment at Tsogo Sun hotels, are better performance, coverage and signal quality.
