C fails in attack on MTN ad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (<a title=\"ASA\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/306365-ASA-Advertising-Standards-Authority\">ASA<\/a>) dismissed a complaint by <a title=\"Cell C\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/213919-Cell-C\">Cell C<\/a> against <a title=\"MTN airtime reseller\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/98706-mtn-airtime-reseller-project-launched.html\"><strong>MTN\u2019s Mobile Money Reseller Project<\/strong><\/a> advertising, which promises to a put a dent in unemployment.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226943-MTN\">MTN<\/a> advertisement contains the heading \u201cLet\u2019s try to put a dent in unemployment\u201d, adding that the Mobile Money Reseller Project gives South Africans the opportunity to make money by reselling airtime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor every amount sold, 5% of the airtime value will be deposited into the reseller\u2019s Mobile Money Account, giving him or her the opportunity to build and sustain a regular source of income,\u201d the ad states.<\/p>\n<p>Cell C was not happy with MTN\u2019s claims, saying that MTN\u2019s Mobile Money Reseller Project is not an employment opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnlike real income, the problem with Mobile Money is that it has limited spending capacity,\u201d Cell C argued.<\/p>\n<p>Cell C said that the MTN reseller system does not provide any realistic way for a person to earn the \u201cminimum salaries for domestic worker\u201d of R1,877 per month.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">ASA ruling<\/h3>\n<p>The ASA was not convinced by Cell C\u2019s argument, saying that an Airtime Reseller will \u201cundeniably have the opportunity to make money and earn an income\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The authority added that the MTN advertisement does not encourage people to rely on the Mobile Money Reseller Project offering alone, or to forego any other employment opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>The ASA ruled that the advertisement is not misleading, and hence dismissed Cell C\u2019s complaint.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #263034;\">More on ASA
