Akamai has released its State of the Internet Q4 2013 report, which shows that global voice traffic has declined for the first time ever.<\/p>\n

The Akamai report uses insight from mobile vendor Ericsson. Ericsson\u2019s presence in more than 180 countries, and its customer base representing more than 1,000 networks, enables it to measure mobile voice and data volumes.<\/p>\n

The result is a representative base for calculating world total mobile traffic in 2G, 3G, and 4G networks (not including DVB-H, Wi-Fi, and Mobile WiMAX).<\/p>\n

According to the report, mobile data traffic continues to grow at a rapid rate. Data traffic grew around 15% between the third and fourth quarters of 2013.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe number of mobile data subscriptions is increasing rapidly, and driving growth in data traffic along with a continuous increase in the average data volume per subscription,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n

It should be noted that data and voice traffic around the world show large differences in traffic levels between markets and regions. There are also differences between operators due to their different customer profiles.<\/p>\n
