Telkom dismissed rumours that this crash may have been caused by sabotage.

Telkom’s Customer Business System crashed late on Wednesday 28 May. This system is at the core of Telkom’s operations, and caused delays in placing new orders, fault logging, and resolving customer queries.

It is understood that manual workarounds had to be used to compensate for the loss of its core business systems.

The downtime was caused by a disk array failure, and some of the replacement parts had to be sourced internationally.

The restoration time ran into days – from Wednesday 28 May 2014 to Sunday 1 June 2014.

Telkom warned customers of potential delays on its website, and through its social media channels.

Telkom sabotage rumours dismissed

The system crashed was blamed on a radial server failure, with the backup server also failing. This is unusual, especially because the backup server is not hosted in the same location.

Rumours are now floating around in Telkom that this was not an accident, and is linked to Telkom’s plans to cut staff.

Telkom has recently embarked on a restructuring process which will see up to 1,000 of management staff losing their jobs.

Telkom said that it does not comment on rumours.
