{"id":104895,"date":"2014-06-26T15:35:37","date_gmt":"2014-06-26T13:35:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=104895"},"modified":"2014-06-26T17:00:14","modified_gmt":"2014-06-26T15:00:14","slug":"eskom-protest-planned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/government\/104895-eskom-protest-planned.html","title":{"rendered":"Eskom protest planned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Union of Mineworkers of SA (<a title=\"Numsa\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/508282-National-Union-of-Metalworkers-of-SA-NUMSA\">Numsa<\/a>) will demonstrate over wage increases at <a title=\"Eskom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/313497-Eskom\">Eskom<\/a> plants next week, it said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Come hell or high water, the Numsa national executive committee&#8230; resolved that Numsa members in Eskom must join a protest march on [Tuesday],&#8221; deputy general secretary <a title=\"Karl Cloete\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/500758-Karl-Cloete\">Karl Cloete<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>The union is demanding a one-year wage increase agreement from the power utility of 12 percent across the board and a housing allowance of R1000.<\/p>\n<p>Other demands include a 16 percent incentive scheme and a standby allowance of R100.<\/p>\n<p>Eskom reportedly offered 5.6 percent, but it would not confirm this.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Eskom wishes to advise that salary negotiation matters are confidential issues between it and its recognised trade unions,&#8221; it said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>As such, the company would not disclose details of the negotiations to the media.<\/p>\n<p>Eskom said disagreement over salary increases and conditions of service led to the matter being referred to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA).<\/p>\n<p>Cloete said Numsa would not be dissuaded from pursuing industrial action despite threats of mass dismissals if its members at Eskom embarked on an unprotected strike.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Eskom is unwilling to consider the fact that not everyone employed at Eskom&#8230; can be regarded as an essential service worker.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Because Eskom is designated an essential service provider, workers are prohibited from striking.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are quite willing to risk unprotected action. This time around, Numsa members in Eskom shall not be deterred by the so-called essential service provisions, behind which Eskom is hiding.
