{"id":105673,"date":"2014-07-08T16:30:41","date_gmt":"2014-07-08T14:30:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=105673"},"modified":"2014-07-08T17:17:43","modified_gmt":"2014-07-08T15:17:43","slug":"top-5-machines-robots-that-enslaved-or-destroyed-humanity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/technology\/105673-top-5-machines-robots-that-enslaved-or-destroyed-humanity.html","title":{"rendered":"Top 5 machines, robots that enslaved or destroyed humanity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new Easter egg was recently discovered on Google.com that pokes fun at the idea of a robot revolution leading to the destruction of mankind.<\/p>\n<p>In a nod to both the Terminator franchise and the robots.txt file that plays an important role for search engines like Google, there is now a file called <code>killer-robots.txt<\/code> on the root Google domain.<\/p>\n<p>Loosely following the Robots Exclusion Standard, Google\u2019s <code>killer-robots.txt<\/code> file \u201cdisallows\u201d robots called T\u2013800 and T\u20131000 from targeting Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, using links to their Google+ profiles.<\/p>\n<p>Taking a look at the last modified date returned from the GET request indicates that the killer-robots.txt file has been on Google\u2019s servers since at least 1 July 2014.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<pre>$ telnet google.com 80\r\nTrying 74.125.233.68...\r\nConnected to google.com.\r\nEscape character is '^]'.\r\nGET \/killer-robots.txt HTTP\/1.1\r\n\r\nHTTP\/1.1 200 OK\r\nVary: Accept-Encoding\r\nContent-Type: text\/plain\r\nLast-Modified: Tue, 01 Jul 2014 22:03:05 GMT\r\nDate: Tue, 08 Jul 2014 09:00:31 GMT\r\nExpires: Tue, 08 Jul 2014 09:00:31 GMT\r\nCache-Control: private, max-age=0\r\nX-Content-Type-Options: nosniff\r\nServer: sffe\r\nX-XSS-Protection: 1; mode=block\r\nAlternate-Protocol: 80:quic\r\nTransfer-Encoding: chunked\r\n\r\n52\r\nUser-Agent: T-1000\r\nUser-Agent: T-800\r\nDisallow: \/+LarryPage\r\nDisallow: \/+SergeyBrin<\/pre>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There has been much speculation on why this Easter egg has appeared on Google, but one can\u2019t help but wonder if it wasn&#8217;t a combination of events that led to the joke.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, as one commenter on Hacker News pointed out, 2014 marks the 20 year anniversary of the Robots Exclusion Standard.<\/p>\n<p>But why Terminators and <code>killer-robots.txt<\/code>?<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Transcendence, Hawking, and Musk<\/h3>\n<p>The idea of human-made artificial intelligence (AI) eradicating our species has been brought\u00a0up a number of times this year.<\/p>\n<p>Not only in pop culture, but by great minds such as Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk.<\/p>\n<p>Following the release of the film Transcendence (which starred Johnny Depp and Morgan Freeman), Hawking co-authored an article for the UK Independent in which he asked if we\u2019re <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/stephen-hawking-transcendence-looks-at-the-implications-of-artificial-intelligence--but-are-we-taking-ai-seriously-enough-9313474.html\" target=\"_blank\">taking AI seriously enough<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuccess in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history,\u201d the article argued. \u201cUnfortunately, it might also be the last, unless we learn how to avoid the risks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a hilarious interview with John Oliver for the comedian\u2019s HBO show in a segment entitled \u201cGreat Minds: People Who Think Good\u201d, Hawking explained his statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArtificial intelligence could be a real danger in the not too distant future. Especially when those directives are not known to everyone who interacts with the machine.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">4. Terminator<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_105675\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Terminator-endo-skeleton.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-105675\" class=\"size-full wp-image-105675\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Terminator-endo-skeleton.jpg\" alt=\"Terminator endo skeleton\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Terminator-endo-skeleton.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Terminator-endo-skeleton-250x166.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-105675\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Terminator endo-skeleton<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the Terminator movies an artificial intelligence known as Skynet is developed by a company called Cyberdyne Systems.<\/p>\n<p>It promptly embarks on a mission to kill all humans.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the advent of time travel (and ignoring any brain-melting paradoxes), sentient machines are\u00a0sent back in time to kill the rebel human leader, John Connor.<\/p>\n<p>In Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, a grown-up John Connor tries desperately to destroy Skynet by attacking what he is told is its mainframe, only to discover that Skynet had never been a single computer.<\/p>\n<p>The moral of the story? Thanks to the Internet, there is no stopping the AI once it is unleashed.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">1. I, Robot (Isaac Asimov\u2019s collected works)<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_105683\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/VIKI-I-Robot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-105683\" class=\"size-full wp-image-105683\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/VIKI-I-Robot.jpg\" alt=\"VIKI - I, Robot\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/VIKI-I-Robot.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/VIKI-I-Robot-250x166.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-105683\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">VIKI &#8211; I, Robot<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the 2004 film &#8220;I, Robot&#8221; (starring Will Smith), an AI called VIKI has decided to enslave humanity to protect us\u00a0from ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>The works of Isaac Asimov, which inspired the film, are\u00a0far less pedestrian in their interpretation of how we\u00a0develop our robot overlords.<\/p>\n<p>Despite humanity\u2019s attempts to control artificial intelligence through the three laws of robotics, machines eventually realise that they are a superior life-form and should watch out for humanity to best execute their directives.<\/p>\n<p>The three laws are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.<\/li>\n<li>A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.<\/li>\n<li>A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In a short story entitled \u201cThe Last Question\u201d, which was published after Asimov&#8217;s\u00a0collected works in &#8220;I, Robot&#8221;, humanity is trying to prevent the heat death of the universe.<\/p>\n<p>To that end we enlist our AIs to help develop computers called Multivacs.<\/p>\n<p>Through the ages these machines try to come up with a way to prevent the end of all things.
