{"id":106912,"date":"2014-08-03T12:38:30","date_gmt":"2014-08-03T10:38:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=106912"},"modified":"2014-08-03T12:39:36","modified_gmt":"2014-08-03T10:39:36","slug":"backtracker-sa-cycling-gadget-hits-dragon-innovation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/gadgets\/106912-backtracker-sa-cycling-gadget-hits-dragon-innovation.html","title":{"rendered":"Backtracker: SA cycling gadget hits Dragon Innovation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South African startup iKubu has developed a new safety device for cyclists it calls the \u201cBacktracker\u201d, and is funding it through Dragon Innovation.<\/p>\n<p>The device consists of a back light and radar unit that is mounted on the rear of a bicycle, and a front unit that indicates the speed and distance of cars approaching from behind the cyclist.<\/p>\n<p>It also uses the range detection of the radar to automatically have the back light blink faster the closer cars get to the cyclist.<\/p>\n<p>The Backtracker will be able to detect cars at a range of up to 140 meters, offering cyclists a \u201csixth sense\u201d about potential danger approaching from behind them at a range where they may not be able to hear vehicles, or see them in a rear-view mirror.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/98659159?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0&amp;color=ff6917\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_106914\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Backtracker-front-unit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106914\" class=\"size-full wp-image-106914\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Backtracker-front-unit.jpg\" alt=\"Backtracker front unit\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Backtracker-front-unit.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Backtracker-front-unit-250x166.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-106914\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Backtracker front unit<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to iKubu, the Backtracker was inspired in 2010 thanks to the story of an elderly cyclist who resorted to riding on the wrong side of the road out of fear of the motorists behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the Backtracker, the company had been working on computer vision and radar systems since 2006, which iKubu said they created from their workshop in Stellenbosch.<\/p>\n<p>The development hours have culminated in what iKubu call a \u201cmarket-ready prototype\u201d, and a crowdfunding campaign with Dragon Innovation &#8211; which has worked for Pebble (a smart watch) and MakerBot (3D printers).<\/p>\n<p>At the time of publication, there were 51 days left on the <a title=\"Backtracker on Dragon Innovation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dragoninnovation.com\/projects\/41-backtracker-by-ikubu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Backtracker crowdfunding campaign<\/a>, which has raised over $69,000 (US) of its $194,500 goal.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign currently offers Backtrackers from $179 to backers, with the normal price set at $199.
