{"id":10869,"date":"2009-12-17T12:16:00","date_gmt":"2009-12-17T10:16:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-12-17T12:16:00","modified_gmt":"2009-12-17T10:16:00","slug":"broadband-technologies-sa-versus-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/10869-broadband-technologies-sa-versus-the-world.html","title":{"rendered":"Broadband technologies:  SA versus the world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) recently released its June 2009 statistics on broadband in OECD countries.&nbsp; The latest statistics include figures on the average number of broadband subscriptions per 100 inhabitants in OECD (average 22.8) and which technologies are the most popular around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>According to the OECD report DSL remains the most popular technology with 60% of all broadband subscribers in the OECD accessing the Internet via ADSL.&nbsp; Cable modems remain popular in countries like the US and Canada and accounts for 29% of all broadband connections while Fibre &amp; LAN connections are gaining ground with 9% market share.&nbsp; Only 2% of broadband subscribers in the OECD regions use something other than these three fixed line connections.<\/p>\n<p>In South Africa the situation looks very different.&nbsp; Only 29% of broadband subscribers in South Africa used ADSL&nbsp; &#8211; and hence a fixed line broadband connection &#8211; well below the OECD standard of 98%.&nbsp; Wireless broadband connections account for 71% of all broadband connections in the country of which around 66% are 3G\/HSDPA connections provided by Vodacom and MTN.<\/p>\n<p>While wireless technologies like HSPA are consistently improving in terms of speed and latency, the low usage limits and high per-GB cost associated with mobile broadband means that most broadband users in South Africa have a very restrictive Internet experience.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?p=3452362#post3452362\">Broadband technologies: &nbsp;SA versus the world<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Which broadband technologies are the most popular locally and abroad?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-10869","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-broadband"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10869"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=10869"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10869\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=10869"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=10869"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=10869"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
