To launch an SVOD (subscription video on demand) product like that, a Netflix clone, over-the-top, you need to be on a myriad of devices, you’ve got to be on pretty much every smart TV platform, every device, so that you can get distribution. And then you need scale in the market, to get lots of users on broadband. We are still sub 500,000 homes that can do it. It’s very hard to build a business model on such a small number.

He said he hoped that with an increase in video on demand services the broadband situation in South Africa would improve.

More on video on demand

Stand-alone DStv on-demand TV series considered

Big new DStv Explora features announced

DStv streaming outside SA not allowed: MultiChoice

MultiChoice believes that Times Media’s new subscription video service Vidi will suffer due to a lack of scale

[24
1295,35,475,27074,26738,26544
post-111528","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-broadcasting","tag-altech","tag-headline","tag-multichoice","tag-node","tag-times-media","tag-vidi
