{"id":112590,"date":"2014-10-21T14:00:04","date_gmt":"2014-10-21T12:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=112590"},"modified":"2014-10-22T11:21:42","modified_gmt":"2014-10-22T09:21:42","slug":"dstv-samsung-android-app-exclusivity-ending-soon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/112590-dstv-samsung-android-app-exclusivity-ending-soon.html","title":{"rendered":"DStv-Samsung Android app exclusivity ending soon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The DStv BoxOffice mobile application will become more widely available from early\u00a02015, the CEO of DStv Digital Media, John Kotsaftis, told journalists at a recent media engagement.<\/p>\n<p>DStv BoxOffice is MultiChoice\u2019s transactional video on demand service which lets users rent movies online.<\/p>\n<p>Subscribers to DStv\u2019s Compact, Extra, and Premium bouquets can also get access to some BoxOffice content via HD decoders with personal video recording capabilities, and receive a discount on rentals.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the mobile app for BoxOffice is only available on the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 as part of an exclusivity deal with Samsung South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>This exclusivity is set to come to an end on 30\u00a0October\u00a02014.<\/p>\n<p>When the exclusivity period comes to an end, the DStv BoxOffice app will launch on other Android devices and become available on other platforms, Kotsaftis told MyBroadband.<\/p>\n<p>One notable exception is devices based on Apple\u2019s iOS mobile operating system such as the iPhone and iPad, Kotsaftis said.<\/p>\n<p>This is because of the commission Apple charges on anything sold within iOS applications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo give away 30% of your top line is massive,\u201d Kotsaftis said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:\u00a0<\/strong>An earlier version of this article reported that the DStv BoxOffice app would become more widely available from January 2015, but a spokesperson for DStv Digital Media has subsequently said that the exact timing is not confirmed yet and that it is more accurate to say &#8220;from early 2015&#8221;. The article has been updated accordingly.
