In December last year Internet Service Provider (ISP) Cybersmart launched their free hosting service, offering all South African consumers a free entry level hosting package. Cybersmart MD Laurie Fialkov said at the time that peering in South Africa does not provide the benefits he expected, and that they “figured if we have to pay for our users to collect content from other providers it would be cheaper to create our own content which is exactly what we are doing.”<\/p>\n
At the time the free entry level hosting package offered subscribers 30 MB of disk space, 150 MB of traffic, 10 email addresses and CPanel access. Cybersmart ADSL subscribers received 50 MB of disk space, 300 MB of traffic, 20 Mailboxes and CPanel access.<\/p>\n
One of the complaints from some consumers was that it only allowed them to run a basic HTML website as there was no PHP or database support, and Cybersmart has now addressed this issue. <\/p>\n
The free hosting package which is available to everyone has been upgraded and now offers PHP support with the 30MB disk space and 150MB of monthly data transfer. Cybersmart ADSL subscribers will now get PHP and MySQL support with their 50 MB of disk space and 300 MB of monthly traffic, and will have access to four server-ready applications: Joomla, WordPress, PHP BB and Drupal.<\/p>\n
This upgrade means that the Cybersmart free hosting offers more value to users than many of the low-end hosting packages offered by local hosting providers. Typical low end hosting packages in South Africa don’t offer PHP and database support, and typically retail for between R20 and R60 per month.<\/p>\n
