Ten people have been arrested for allegedly stealing copper cables, North West police said on Friday.<\/p>\n
“Police in Marikana and Aquarius mine security officials apprehended 10 suspects for theft and possession of suspected stolen copper cables on Wednesday,” spokesman Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said in a statement.<\/p>\n
“The suspects were arrested at a disused Aquarius mine shaft after information was received that there were illegal activities taking place at the shaft.”<\/p>\n
Mokgwabone said eight of the men were foreign nationals from Mozambique and Zimbabwe, while the other two were South Africans.<\/p>\n
Police recovered pots, torches and hacksaws, as well as tinned food, during the arrests.<\/p>\n
“According to the information, some of the suspects were also found in possession of dagga,” he said.<\/p>\n
The recovered cables weighed 5380 kilograms, with an estimated value of R109,000.<\/p>\n
The group was expected to appear in the Marikana Periodical Court on Monday to face charges of theft, possession of suspected stolen goods and possession of dagga.<\/p>\n
